Two sided coins are widely referred to as challenge coins or commemorative coins that are handed out by the military, fire departments, police departments, federal government agencies, and corporations. Their purpose recognizes achievement, commitment, loyalty, teamwork, and memberships.
We first discuss and consult with clients about their ideas and budget for personalized coins. When the customer supplies camera ready art there is no charge. Without artwork supplied by customer there is a charge that is determined by the clarity and complexity of the design presented.
We determine clients' choice of metal and method of production based on the customers artwork or rough sketch, image, and budget. Clients choose the metals ranging from brass, bronze, sterling silver, to zinc. Clients have two methods of production to choose from that being die struck and die cast.

Die striking uses brass, bronze, or semi-precious medals. Die casting uses only zinc. Striking requires the use of a steel die while casting requires the use of a steel mold. Both processes produce a high quality personalized challenge coin. The choice of which process to use is based on the customers budget. Die striking will be more expensive then die casting which is based on the cost of the metal. In addition there will be a difference in the coins weight between striking and casting which is a result of brass or bronze having a greater weight then zinc. However, both processes can produce the same quality custom commemorative coin.
The clients artwork tell us if the coin has 3-dimensional or 2-dimensional image features or both. 3-dimensional images refer to modeling and sculpturing of multiple levels, while 2-dimensional images refer to just two levels that are flat. The three dimensional side of the coin will have a higher prep charge then the two dimensional side. We then establish the proper size, shape, and thickness of your personalized challenge coin. The size of coins traditionally range between 1-1/2” to 3”. The majority of coins are round but special shapes can be produced. The thickness range between 2mm to 4mm but Most coins are 3mm (1/8”). If piercing is required, then we cut out parts of the coin. If numbered coins are required, we can consecutively number with up to 6 numbers. To accomplish the numbering, we raise portions on the coins for numbering.
We offer various standard finishes for personalized coins such as antique brass, pewter and bronze. For brighter finishes, we offer bright gold and silver color finishes. Backgrounds can be sandblasted or stippled finishes. Both background finishes provide sharp contrast to the raised parts of the coin. The polishing of the high points on the custom commemorative coin improves the contrast to the background. Normally, the design layout determines the most affective finish.
The majority of personalized coins produced today are enameled or have printed colors that improve the value and appearance of the coins. There are two options to enameling which are soft epoxy enamel or hard stoned enamel. Once again a well-defined design layout determine the choice of enamel. Printing colors are placed on top of the enamel or without the enamel. If there only printed colors, then we normally apply clear epoxy coatings. The printed color process is used more than enameling when the design shows finer details and many colors. Historically, many coins are made with both options applied to both sides of the coins.
We provide clients with the option to apply bright diamond engraved scalloped edges to their personalized challenge coins through different cutting patterns. Edge finishes carry additional costs but dramatically add value.
We provide several options for packaging your custom commemorative coin: poly bags, vinyl clear pouches, air tight clear circular plastic boxes, and Velour hard covered coin boxes with a recessed area to hold the coins.
Preparation charges for dies or molds apply regardless of artwork. Whether the design is 3-dimensional or 2-Dimensional impacts the prep charge. Quantities over 10,000 pieces have no prep charges. We can supply pre-production samples with charges ranging from $30.00 to $45.00. As long as we follow the artwork as requested any changes to the pre-production samples will require new dies or molds which have to be charged. If the sample does not match the artwork there is no charge for a new mold or die. Pre-production samples will extend the delivery time.
After the design requirements are completed, we provide the quote for your personalized coin based on quantity and budget. Minimum quantities and price breaks range based on the selection of die struck or die cast challenge coins. Which process to be used has to be established from the beginning in consolation with the customer.

At the time of the quote specific delivery date requirements are established such as the dates for the pre-production samples, production time, and a delivery date.
Die striking is a coining process that uses a hammer or hydraulic press. The press holds the die and compresses the metal into the image. The dies can be two sided or one sided. The commemorative coin is then trimmed and prepared for finishes.

Die casting is casting is process accomplished with a die casting machine that forces the liquid metal into the mold under high pressure. After the process, the coins excess metal is cleaned off and prepared for the finishes.
